Get all the details on Warsaw winner Architectenbureau cepezed b.v. and their winning entry, Kick Start
In designing Kick Start, winning entry for Poland, Dutch firm Architectenbureau cepezed b.v., understood that the problem of providing housing in growing populations is essentially one of availability. Availability is defined by land (to build on), usability and, naturally, money. Consequently the firm’s design philosophy was to maximise the usability for the available money, creating a building system that can provide a sustainable and modern dwelling space with minimal use of materials.
The building’s system is created of fully recyclable components that are prefabricated and can be assembled in a variety of combinations, without complicating the system. Light construction and good insulation combined with energy reutilisation enables minimal use of materials and energy during production and life cycle.
Homeowners buy essentially a kit of parts that can be altered according to individual tastes. Yet the unit can be easily adapted to changing dwelling requirements, enhancing the buyer’s investment. Introduction of new home technology is possible without making major alterations. A second-hand part market is feasible. The system can even be demounted and used on a different site.
Kick Start-based dwellings can be created to any need or financial potential, and parking can be created under the dwellings at virtually no extra cost. As well, this light weight system can be constructed with as many as six levels without making extra site provisions. Elevators can be added if necessary, even at a later stage. The system enables easy exchange, elimination, replacement and addition of components during the lifetime of the building, extending its useful life. Plans and even ownership can be altered and the dwellings adapted to different building project requirements. New technical developments can be added or renewed due to their shorter lifespan, without impairing the structure.
Weighing in at just 2,500 kg, Kick Start’s prefabricated system is so light that all elements can be transported by road and assembled using small building cranes. Complicated parts, like the bathroom/toilet prefabricated cell, can be shipped fully assembled or assembled at the construction site. The floor system can be preassembled in transportable 2.4 m wide units, depending on the project size and the site’s accessibility by trucks.
