Abstract: Two members of 1:1 full scale steel plate shear wall with silts (SPSWS) subjected to low-frequent cyclic loads are tested and reported in this paper. It focuses on the research of the stiffness, the load-carrying capacity, the fracture characteristics and the hysteretic behavior of the steel sheet wall. Test results show that the test specimens have good behaviors such as large initial stiffness, considerable capacity of ductileness and energy dissipation.

As a new kind of lateral force resistant system, the steel sheet shear wall has been much researched for the recent years, which has been used in the actual projects.

In terms of the thickness, the steel sheet shear wall is divided into thick steel plate shear wall and thin steel plate shear wall, which is mostly applied in Japan and North American regions respectively. In recent years, Japan has carried out researches on a new type of steel sheet shear wall - steel plate shear wall with silts (SPSWS). Based on the a great lot of experimental investigations, Hitaka from Japan Kyushu University put forward the stiffness calculation formulation, yield and ultimate bearing resistance computing formula, and also proposed some suggestions on the overall size and slit parameters setting on the basis of 43 test results (2).

The research results indicated that, compared with other type of shear wall, the new type of steel sheet shear wall has unique advantages, such as: The wall body has more steady hysteretic behavior due to the dissipation energy caused by the bending of columns between slits. The stiffness and strength can be adjusted by changing the slit parameters; Because SPSWS can be disconnected with the column, it thus reduces the additional bending moment action produced by wall to the framework column. The wall can be arranged not using full span of the framework, so the buildings layout will not be limited. So, there are certain advantages in the development and application of it for the steel structure dwelling house. Therefore, Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., LTD, desired to conduct and develop the corresponding tests, theories and application research in this field, in collaboration with Tongji University and Beijing SBS Industrialization Housing Engineering LTD etc.,

The paper will give a brief introduction to the low-frequent cyclic horizontal load test with two members of SPSWS, just performed and completed by Tongji University.
