
This month, an estimated five million people will pick up their lives and migrate to an urban area. And it will happen next month and the one after that as well. UN-Habitat* predicts that in just two decades, 60 percent of the world’s population will dwell in urban areas and by 2050, that number will inch to 70 percent. Such a massive shift of population stresses everything in a city—infrastructure, hospitals, the environment and, of course, housing. Meeting the challenge to house the growing world population has been the focus of Living Steel’s mission since its inception in 2005 and has sparked the International Architecture Competitions for Sustainable Housing, which inspired architects around the world in producing 48 unique designs.
