Winning Architects Announced at Regional Events United Kingdom
In London, UK winning architects, Cartwright Pickard, as well as the resident short-list architects for the UK demonstration were honoured at a reception held by Living Steel and Corus Group at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on the 18th of October. Fittingly enough, the reception was held at the top of the Institute's headquarters in the centre of London, overlooking the urban architecture and the London Eye.
An exhibition was held showcasing the work of the six short-listed schemes for the United Kingdom, as well as the winning designs for the China and Brazil locations. Also on display was Cartwright Pickard's scale model of the winning scheme for the Thames Gateway site. The display also included the 1st Competition's winning scheme for Kolkata, conceptualised by UK firm Piercy Conner, as well as the winning scheme for Poland.
Guests included journalists, members of the Housing Corporation and property developers, UK architects and other members of the design community. Also in attendance were Competition jurors Andrew Ogorzalek (PCKO architects) and James Berry (Skanska). James Pickard and Steven Coyle of Cartwright Pickard were honoured as the UK demonstration project winners. Orgorzalek delivered a keynote address to the group concentrating on the cultural emphasis of each location's brief and the jury's assessment process to select the winners.
"The designs were very well received, with much interest generated in the schemes for India and the UK since they are the work of UK architects," said Matthew Teague, Chairman of Living Steel's Competition and Demonstration Group and Design Coordinator at Corus Construction Group. "The group is very interested and engaged to see these examples of sustainable steel construction move forward to completion."
