Living Steel's demonstration project is located in New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata. New Town is a well-planed, fast-growing metropolis for a population over 10 million. It offers abundant greenery and water bodies, a pollution-free environment, a well laid out network of wide roads and provision for all modern amenities and infrastructure. It is located 10 km to the Northeast of Kolkata's Central Business District and about 1 km from Kolkata International Airport.

Rajarhat is being planned as a major hub for business, trade, industry, institutions and culture. Though it is planned as a self-contained nodal growth centre, the New Town willb e integrated fully with the future sptial and functional structure of Kolkata.

As quoted in the Times of India: "The sheer size and scope of Rajarhat New Town is overwhelming. With more than 1.5 million people that's nearly eight times the population of Salt Lake expected to move into the planned township by 2015, the government has started planning well beforehand." HIDCO has taken care to build markets, pharmacies and other retail outlets simultaneously with other infrastructure and buildings in the emerging township. Usual practice is for these services to be added in a final phase of community development; however because of the expectations for New Town, this development is taking place at the same time as residential construction.
