International Competition Adds Two Prestigious Jurors Renowned architects Cui Kai of China, and Roberto Loeb, Brazil, will join the Jury Board for Living Steel's 2nd International Competition for Sustainable Housing.
Cui Kai is a member of the China Architecture Design & Research Group (CAG), an architecture design and scientific research enterprise. Among his many accomplishments are the design of the Capital Museum and the Kangbao Garden, both in Beijing, and the Residential Community of Tianyi Garden in Ningbo. Kai has won numerous awards, including Best Architectural Design for the Hyatt Regency Xian and Fengzeyuan Beijing hotels and the National "Architect Cup" Best Design prize for Young and Middle-Aged Designers. Most celebrated is his contribution to the Commune by the Great Wall, the "See and Seen" villa, which won him a special prize at La Biennale di Venezia in 2002.
Roberto Loeb has a long career of world-class design projects throughout Brazil. Loeb's principal objective is to celebrate the human being as the focal point of social, cultural, and economic development. He has applied this philosophy to the design of buildings, such as the BASF headquarters and Meliá Hotel and Convention Centre in São Paulo, the 200,000 m Hopi Hari Theme Park in Vinhedo, Brazil, and a Brazilian cosmetic factory. Loeb was invited in 2004 to serve on the jury board of an international creativity competition in the Ukraine. His work has been the subject of several exhibitions in Paris, New York, and Brussels.
Kai and Loeb will join the Board as it deliberates next May over the eighteen short-listed firms who will submit designs for housing in China, Brazil and the UK.
The UIA-approved 2nd International Competition for Sustainable Housing Call for Expressions of Interest is in progress, with expressions due by 12 January 2007. Interested architects may apply online at Enter Competition. Eighteen firms will be short-listed to submit final designs that demonstrate buildings able to meet a growing housing need in a way that improves on economic, environmental and social performance of current housing. The three winning firms (one per location) will be commissioned to produce final designs for construction that will be built in the target locations during 2007-08.
