Portable buildings, what we today call prefabs, have played an important role in historical operations such as colonisation, mining, whaling and exploration. Timber buildings had always been used for such purposes, but in the nineteenth century experiments began with other materials such as iron. Living Steel has commissioned an article by Professor Miles Lewis, a specialist in 19th Century prefab homes. The article covers the emergence of iron prefab housing from its inception in the UK to its use in Africa, Australia and the US.
