The design for the competition draws on the Russian dacha culture and looks at the possibility of creating an eco village that explores the needs of the emerging modern Russian culture. The modest dacha structure plays a very intrinsic role in Russian life. The scale, lightness and integration with the landscape exude a sense of temporality and distinct character. The plan takes into account the climatic aspect where the size of the building’s footprint and the possible volume is determined by the activity of the sun. The resulting space is longer along the east-west axis with maximum surface exposure along the southern side. The living spaces are accommodated along this edge to make use of the available winter sun. Service spaces, like toilets, the staircase and utilities, are located along the northern edge and act as a buffer against the cold northern winds. An interactive façade provides a transition space between the indoors and outdoors as well as glazing that opens fully to allow maximum ventilation in warmer months.
