Hideto Horiike + Urtopia Inc

The use of a ‘winter garden' forms a central component to Hideto Horiike Urtopia Inc's entry. The building comprises a monocoque structure of steel panels to create an outer shell, with a flexible interior created with movable partition walls. A glass atrium in the centre of the building acts as a winter garden open to residents and also as a thermal buffer zone.

In the winter, heating loss in minimized thanks to the open space which retains a higher temperature than the outside. In the summer, the space is naturally ventilated and features ‘wind holes' that enhance cross ventilation and prevent the need for air conditioning
