La Reserva House
La Reserva House, designed by Sebastian Irarrazaval Architects, Santiago, Chile, is a low-cost housing project, 140 m2, to be sold and repeated in as many places as there are people to live in it. Because of this commitment to repeatability, the design relates to the idea of the container since it has no set building site. With the purpose of reducing construction time, geometry is simple and uses a prefabricated construction system. Its arrangement is in a cross shape where, in order to embrace the nearby landscape; public areas are placed in a second level in a four meters-high cube.
Unique to this house is the creation of a façade that contributes significantly to ventilation of the interior space. The severe volume is covered with steel plates that create a double façade. The steel plates retain heat, and as the façade heats up, it subsequently increases ventilation of the space in between the double facade, refreshing the inner side of the wall.
With regard to materials, the building recognizes the inherent uncertainty and inevitability of weathering as a continuation of the building process rather than as a force antagonistic to it.
The key advantages of the house design are a low-cost construction that is quick to build because of its prefabricated system. As well, the house provides inherent environmental advantages from the ventilated façade, which reduces the need for mechanical cooling.
This project was featured at the VIII Venice Biennale of Architecture and has been published in architectural books and magazines, such as Phaidon Architectural Atlas of XXI Century, Phaidon 10x10 Architectural book Nº 3 and AU Monographic Number of Chilean Architecture.
